| It doesn't matter what magazine or internet site you view, the west coast of New Zealand's south island consistently rates as one of the world's top "most scenic" drives. It is an amazing drive, of persistent vistas from peak to sea. The west coast is an incredible rainforest, the transition of plant species from the coast to the alps a wonderful experience. Driving the coastline and enjoying the Nikau Palms and tree ferns while zig zagging on highway 6 is, indeed, a special trip. |

Westport has its own airport serviced by Air New Zealand Link via Wellington or by chartered aircraft flights to and from Christchurch. The closest international airports are Christchurch and Wellington. Greymouth - The capital and also the largest town on the Coast. Best known for its jade crafts, Shantytown historic gold town and award winning Monteiths' Brewery. Hokitika - Main town in the south West Coast and host to the West Coast Museum, craft galleries, many historic buildings and the native fish of New Zealand aquarium.
